HEWITT HOUSE:

Dr. William Hewitt lived here and operated a manganese mine on the property. There are several outbuildings and a quarry where the mining operation took place. There is also a small cemetery near the house with a stone wall and gate.  The only resident I saw was a buzzard living on a chimney. As Dr. Hewitt grew old he lost his sight and made furniture.  The house was built around 1860 by Hewitt’s Father and added onto by the Dr.

HOGUE FARM:

The Hogue farm is on Halsey’s Bridge Rd. The Hogues were some of the first “Free” blacks to settle in Evington. They immigrated to Evington after the civil war as free individuals and ran the farm and a store on Rt. 696 near the Robertson farm.  I never saw a picture of the house standing, but Marvin Phillips said it was a nice house with a leaded glass front door. The house burnt down. There are also the remains of a wood mill, several barns, and an old gas pump on the property.

Farmer Arthur home and the Arthur family cemetery.

Recently operated as an organic farm by the Ruffin  family.
